Lord Mayor of York’s auction at According to McGee
The Lord Mayor of York is set to ‘raise funds with some of the most collectible artists of the North’ via a November art exhibition, launching at Tower Street’s According to McGee this Sunday. The show, moving to City Screen’s Sky Lounge from Monday 14th November and running until Sunday 27th November, features work from some of the most well regarded artists of Yorkshire, including Richard Barnes, Richard Moulton, Lesley Birch, Patrick Smith, Malcolm Ludvigsen, Jo Walton, Eddie Grant and many more. According to McGee co-director Greg McGee is jubilant, “Firstly, the Lord Mayor of York is a hep cat. Curating an art auction with him is an honour. Secondly, I run a charity myself, so the idea of dovetailing the selling of art for some great causes is second nature to us. These are great works of art from great local artists, and we’re looking forward to seeing the works snapped up during the bidding process.” Greg is referring to the opportunity for browsers to make bids on the opening night, during the exhibitions run at City Screen, and on the final event on the 27th November. “It’s an auction, but a very slow burning one! What’s great is that philanthropy and beautiful art go hand in hand so easily. You get to make the world a better place and add to your art collection. In making a bid, you’re flipping the old adage around: you don’t give until it hurts, you give until you feel good.”
The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Dave Taylor, says, “I’m indebted to Greg and Ails McGee for putting together an exhibition of collectible works from rising artists, and to those artists themselves for their generosity in supporting the Lord Mayor’s charities.”
All are welcome to attend the launch on Sunday at 6pm at the Tower Street gallery. Says Greg, “The latest chocolatey treats from York Cocoa House await, along with wine, the inimitable company of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, and some live jazz from a white hot trio.” The exhibition culminates in an auction at City Screen. “There’s plenty of time to view the art. It will hang on the walls of the Sky Lounge, and we’ll have a sarky auction night at the end of the month. For those who like a good party and to get their bids in early – we’re looking forward to seeing you on Sunday for a big launch event.”
