The sea is caught at its most restless in Breakers on the Shore. A dark, almost ink-black horizon anchors the composition while successive bands of blue gather and break towards us, dissolving into a foreground of turquoise, chalky white and flashes of sand.
Barnes moves between observation and abstraction: foam becomes calligraphic, water becomes gesture, and the shoreline seems to shift as we look. The result is immediate and exhilarating — less a depiction of the coast than an evocation of standing at its edge.
