Jennifer is a contemporary artist living on the coast in Devon, working as a painter and printmaker with a Fine Art degree and Art teaching background. She is inspired by the landscapes she walks in, building layers of colour, collage and surface texture which reflect the landscape and the memories of being in that place.
She works daily in sketchbooks which become a visual diary of elements which she draws on when creating a body of work. Intuitive painting, mixed media and semi abstraction are important features of Jennifer’s practise. Compositions begin with drawing and collage but often become reworked during the painting process, to achieve a sense of the elements and capturing a moment in time, until they reflect more than a representation, but the feeling of being amongst the cliffs, valley and coastline. Recent work focuses on semi-abstracted landscapes and the recurring shapes and paths we travel over.
“ I draw inspiration from nature. Painting over collage identifies with the landscape I’ve walked in, incorporating found textures. Words half visible from maps or a line of poetry recreates a sense of revisiting these places and infusing them with memories of these moments.”
Some of Jennifer’s drawings from observation develop into hand carved lino prints which explore the everyday and often unnoticed aspects such as a collected find from the beach.
